Sweet Freedom New Year 2020

 Fabric Units Required:
  • Clue #1 - RED/White/RED strip units = eight (8)
  • Clue #3 - Wonky Stars = four (4)
  • Clue #4 - Sweet Freedom Patriotic Panel w/border strips = one (1)
  • Clue #5 - Blue/White Flying Geese strip units = four (4)

Detailed Sewing Instructions:
Sew two (2) RED/White/RED strip units to each side of a 3 ½" x 36 ½” Blue/White Flying Geese strip unit, matching center = 12 ½" x 36 ½” Top/Bottom Border units.

Next:
Sew two (2) RED/White/RED strip units to each side of a 3 ½" x 48 ½” Blue/White Flying Geese strip unit, matching center = 12 ½" x 48 ½” Side Border units.

Attach Border units:
First - Sew the 12 ½" x 48 ½”  RED/White/RED Flying Geese strip units to each side of of the center bordered Sweet Freedom Panel:

Next:  Sew four (4) 12 ½" Wonky Stars to each 'side' of the Top/Bottom border units = Wonky Stars in ALL four corners. I aligned the center stripes of my Wonky Stars vertically prior to attaching to the corners of each Top/Bottom border unit.  You may switch yours horizontally and/or a variety - most any combination will work out as an appealing layout.

Optional borders:
You may choose to finish your patriotic quilt without interior/perimeter borders.  I chose to add one (1) 2 ½" pieced patriotic strip border to the Top/Bottom of the bordered panel, prior to adding the final Top/Bottom borders.  

The advantage:  
For those who may not enjoy aligning the stripes of the RED/White/RED pieced border corner units where they meet vertically/horizontally at the corner of each Wonky Star, this is an alternative technique that is not only very forgiving, but pleasing as well, while allowing for varying panel sizing options.  This is where that +-1" Fudge-factor comes into play for those who may also have wonky panel measurements..quilter's choice!

Sewing Tip:
Take advantage of your feed dogs on your sewing machine by placing your quilt top next to the feed dogs, right side facing UP, w/borders on top - right sides 'together', to avoid stretching of your borders and easing in any possible fullness/unevenness of your borders.

Border Measuring Tip:
Use the measuring tips shared in Clue #4 to determine the final measurements of your perimeter side, Top/Bottom borders - if you choose to add those to your finished Sweet Freedom 2020 quilt.

 Additional Perimeter Borders:
I also chose to add 3 ½" Patriotic Blue perimeter borders because...I LOVE borders!  Again, quilter's choice ;-)

Fabric strips replace our Flying Geese/Eagle units in perimeter borders

Elimination/addition of top/bottom panel strip units and/or reduction in size of corner block units allows for finished quilt size options

As promised, it's MIDNIGHT 'somewhere' of December 31, 2019 , and it's time to release the fabric colors/yardage requirements for our Sweet Freedom Mystery so, without further ado - here you go! White/neutrals = 2 yards Red = 1 3/4 yards, includes enough for binding Blue = 2 1/4 yards  (can be a solid or print) Patriotic fabric scraps = 3/4 yard of various coordinating fabric prints/scraps at least 2 1/2" wide in various lengths will work great! Clue #3 - February 2022 Sweet Freedom Mystery/Reveal!

It's that time again!   Time for our Big Reveal/final clue of our February 2022 Sweet Freedom Mystery...and here it is! Big Reveal - Sweet Freedom Mystery/ February 2022 To complete your Sweet Freedom Mystery, you are going to need to add some more sashing to your previously sashed out panel. Add: One (1) 2" in-the-raw, (1 1/2" FINISHED) White sashing borders on 'each' side of the Red Star borders Press the White borders 'away from' the Red Star borders.  I realize this puts the border seams on the 'White' side of the sashing but, it's intentional to reduce bulk Once the White borders are pressed, Add one (1) 3 1/2" in-the-raw, (3" FINISHED) Blue borders to 'each' side, following the White borders.  Once again, press the Blue border seams towards the Blue fabric and 'away from' the White border Please Note:   these border measurements were used specifically to ensure the final star blocks will 'fit' within...

March 2022 Sweet Freedom Mystery is HERE!

 Welcome to our March 2022 Sweet Freedom Mystery! First - beautiful fabric requirements...these are mine from my personal stash.   Red/White/Blue fabrics Trying to fulfill a 2022 goal of using as much of my personal patriotic stash this year to create beautiful patriotic quilts to Honor our Beloved Veterans and Service Members for the sacrifice and service for our country. Thus, between EQ8 giving me some 'wonky' fabric requirements, using my stash - which was originally  purchased because I liked the gorgeous fabrics and did not really have a project in mind - other than it would be 'patriotic ', so fabric requirements will be based on my best 'guesstimate' ! This month's Sweet Freedom Mystery lends itself well to yardage AND scraps, so dig into your patriotic scrap basked and let's have some FUN creating a beautiful patriotic scrappy quilt!
