Clue #2 - Square Up/Sash

Clue #2 of our February Sweet Freedom Mystery is ready!

But first - time to square-up your panel(s) and add Red border sashings:

Squared-up/Bordered out

Prior to adding ANY borders, first things First.  IF you haven't already, now is the time to square-up/press your patriotic panel.

Time to press w/Best Friend:

Pressing is the Best w/Mary Ellen's ;-)

Now that everything has been trimmed/squared & pressed, time to add some border sashing.

I chose to add 2 1/2" in-the-raw (2" FINISHED) Red Star border sashing strips to each side of my panel - From my Red Star fabric I cut:

  • (4) Four 2 1/2" Red Star fabric
  • GO! Strip Cutter 2 1/2"  (2" FINISHED) Die #55017

How to cut 2 1/2" strips w/AccuQuilt GO! strip cutter dies:

Please Note:  You will need to determine the 'length' measurements of your sashing strips based on 'your' panel measurements ie, did you shorten and/or reduce the length/width size of your panel while you were squaring up/trimming your panel?

Per our previous instruction from the January Sweet Freedom Mystery/It's Border Time blog post in regard to squaring up panels, take the average measurement of your panel sides and cut your sashings length to that average side panel measurement for each border sashing side.  Repeat for your top/bottom panel measurements 'after' attaching your sashings to each side, (which is how 'I' do it.  Others choose to attach top/bottom first...Quilter's Choice!)

Time to attach those border sashings:

Notice, I choose to leave the selvage on one end of my sashing strip to help start my stitching - kind of like a 'built-in' leader/ender.

Once sewn, I make a clean cut of that selvage:

    Trimming the final selvage leader

    Two border sashing sides sewn/pressed:

    Complete w/4 border sashings!

All sashed out, ready for next week!

That's it for this week - tune in next Friday, February 25th  for Clue #3...it's gonna be a stunner ;-)
